Recently, I read an email that said the reason you can’t be creative is because you’re listening to music.

And that’s a fair point.

A lot of people probably don’t work creatively while listening to music.

But I commented:

“What if you work better with music?”

Because I kind of do.

And I was also kind of poking fun at him.

But it made me realize something.

If he had said:

“Most of the time, it’s a good idea not to listen to music because you’ll probably have better creativity and better thoughts.”

That wouldn’t have done as well.

He needed to go fully to one side.

Either music is good, or music is bad.

And that’s polarizing.

It’s interesting.

It gets people on the music side to comment:

“Hey, music is actually good.”

And it gets people on the no-music side to comment:

“Yeah, you know what? You’re right.”

So it creates controversy.

A lot of people in my audience might have an academic or analytical brain.

They think:

“Well, something can’t possibly be true every single time.”

But that simply doesn’t matter for copy.

And you need to get over that.

Because if you don’t, you’ll never become successful at writing copy.

Copy isn’t analytical.

At the end of the day, it’s creative.
