Recently I’ve been trying to get new subscribers for my newsletter.
So I’ve been going on Reddit and posting lead magnets.
The page I’m sending people to is super simple. It’s basically just some fancy design, a few cool animated elements, you know, the usual stuff. And it just tells you to sign up.
The headline says:
“I built this page in 13 minutes using a free tool.”
So essentially I’m trying to get people to sign up because they want the tool.
I went over to Reddit and posted about it. I said something like:
“Hey guys, I just found out about this tool. I had this website for a year, and then my friend looked at it and told me it wasn’t good. So I rebuilt the page using this tool and it only took 13 minutes.”
Then I told them they could get the tool by signing up.
And it didn’t do good at all.
I literally got almost no subscribers from it. I’m pretty sure the post barely got any likes.
So yeah. It wasn’t good.
But a few days later I decided to try something different.
Instead of gatekeeping the tool, I just named the tool in the headline.
No mystery. No hiding it.
And I also gave the exact prompt I used to make the landing page.
And it actually did really well.
Not only did a bunch more people sign up to my newsletter than before, but people were commenting things like:
“I love how you actually mentioned the tool.”
“I joined this community for posts like this.”
“Thanks for sharing the prompt.”
People actually liked the post.
So it just goes to show that being honest and actually providing value is where the money is.
You’re not going to make money sitting there hiding everything and never telling the truth.
It just doesn’t work.
Anyway, that’s about it.
Be honest.
You’ll probably make more money.
