but before i do that, the real reason you’re having trouble writing is because you’re not good at generating ideas. hence ai

I write this newsletter every day, and every single day I get comments like:
“John, how are you so good at writing?”
“How do you articulate yourself so well?”
“How do you keep me interested in the email?”
The reason I’m good and you’re not is because you think you’re good.
You started copywriting because you thought:
“I’m good at writing.”
But you’re actually shit.
There’s a big difference between writing and copywriting.
So the first step is noticing that you’re absolutely dog shit at writing, and quitting this idea that you’re already good.
Number two:
You need to stop being a fucking yapper.
Stop giving people your opinions all the time and start actually locking in.
Keep your message extremely short.
Relay useful information you’ve learned from other sources instead of constantly dumping your own useless opinion onto the page.
Because other people are much better and much more knowledgeable on certain subjects than you are.
Number three:
Read.
Listen.
Copy.
Hand copy.
Study what other people do.
I’ve probably read millions of words from other people.
From copywriting alone, I’ve probably looked through 50 to 100 sales pages.
I’ve handwritten all of The Boron Letters by Gary Halbert.
I’ve watched countless hours of amazing entertainers with really unique styles.
And I came into copywriting knowing I was shit at writing.
Which actually gave me an advantage.
Because I thought:
“Well, now I need to actually get good.”
So you need to stop thinking you’re so good at writing.
Stop thinking you’re so smart.
Stop thinking people automatically care what you have to say.
And actually think about the people you’re writing to.
Because they don’t want to hear you just yap.
They want something useful.
Something interesting.
Something that keeps them reading.
So go look at people who are already good at writing.
Study what they’re doing.
Copy what they’re doing.
Hand copy it.
Break it down.
And humble yourself.
That’s how you get better.
