Best newsletter I’ve ever read on ai without a doubt:
Wake Up Smarter About AI.
Most people feel behind. But the people that don’t, aren’t smarter. They’re just better informed.
The Future Today is a daily news briefing for people who want clarity.
In one concise newsletter, you’ll get the most important tech news, learn why it matters, and what it signals about what’s coming next.
One email. Five Minutes. Stay ahead of 99% of the world.
So someone recently asked me:
I lost it but I was something like how do I tell my client to do x
There’s different ways to go about this, but I’ll try and explain it in steps, and then explain the different routes you can take during each step.
So step number one, of course, is figure out what’s wrong with their marketing.
I’m not gonna tell you how to do that in this email.
Then, ideally, you want to get them on some sort of call.
Now, there’s different ways you can go about this, but a lot of your clients might not want to get on a call, or they’re short on time.
So what you can do is just send them a message and say:
“Hey [Name], so I’ve got three options. We can do this, this, or this.”
Obviously, phrase it better than that.
But the trick is to make sure all three options are good.
Make sure they’re all things you actually want.
For example, you could say:
“Hey [Name], so for the welcome email, I was thinking we could talk about your story, we could talk about the benefits, or we could do both.”
And whichever one they pick, you’re getting a welcome email.
And the welcome email was the thing you wanted all along.
Now, to be honest, some clients just don’t care.
So this is more for clients that do care and are pushing back on your ideas.
If you have a client that doesn’t really want to be in the nitty-gritty of what you’re doing, then just do the stuff.
Whatever.
If you need to run an email campaign, write the email campaign and then tell them about it.
Or whatever else you want to do.
Because they’re probably not really gonna care much.
Another way is to get on a call with them and try to make it feel like they’re coming up with the idea, so they’re more attached to it.
In the same way that a math tutor will kind of sneak the answer out of you.
She’ll ask you questions, and then you’ll answer them in a certain way, and eventually you’ll get to the answer.
You need to do the same thing with your client.
You need to ask certain questions and present certain things in a way where they come up with the idea you wanted.
Or at least part of it.
And then it won’t hurt their ego because, in their mind, they came up with the idea.
Another option is to look at competitors, look at what they’re doing, and say:
“Hey, look, these competitors are doing this. I think we should do it too.”
For example:
“Your competitors are doing a webinar, and they’re making thousands of dollars per month. I think if we did a webinar, we would actually make a lot more money.”
And that’s a good way to frame it because it’s not just:
“Hey client, I thought of this thing.”
No.
It’s:
“Hey client, here’s this thing someone else is doing, and it’s already performing really well.”
And to be honest, if all of that fails, if the nice way fails, at the end of the day, they hired you to do marketing.
So you need to do marketing.
They hired your expertise, so you need to give them your expertise.
And you need to tell them this.
You need to say:
“Hey look, I know you think you know what’s best, but you hired me for marketing. You hired me for my expertise and experience. This is what I’ve seen work, and this is what I think we need to do.”
And if that fails, then honestly, you just have to let them do it their way.
Because at the end of the day, if they’ve already paid you, it’s still their business.
If they want to do it a certain way, then you just have to let them, if everything else fails.
