yo F.A.G. master delux,

I was looking at my wallpaper just now (got it from momentum) and it’s too good not to share with you:

“If you really believe in what you're doing, work hard, take nothing personally and if something blocks one route, find another. Never give up.”

The problem with most people is they take failure seriously.

But you shouldn’t, and I’ll tell a story from one of the best copywriters to ever live - Gary Halbert - to prove it.

So basically when Gary started out, he was dead broke.

I mean, this guy had a pot to shit in and a window to throw it out. Anyways, I think what happens is he saves up some money and quits his job.

He’s in his shitty little apartment or whatever, writing away all day.

And this was years ago so there was no internet. Back then there was something called direct mail, which is basically sending mail to someone’s house.

(yes physical mail)

Anyways, Gary’s strat was:

  • find some paper, a report, or something he could sell - sometimes he made it, sometimes it was someone elses

  • Pay some money to send out the mail to everyone

  • hope someone bought

Now even though a bunch of people think Gary Halbert is a legendary copywriter now, at the time Gary sucked balls.

Like he didn’t even make $100 off these ads.

ALL of them completely bombed.

So for a while Gary would write these sales pages, pay money he didn’t have (probably skipping out on electricity or something), and then wait in a dark house for someone to buy.

But no one ever bought.

So he failed over and over and over, and he was completely broke.

Now eventually he ran one ad and he did REALLY good with it, he turned into a famous copywriter, made a bunch of money, and things weren’t so bad after that, as much as I understand.

Anyways, the point of this story is:

The other day I was listening to a story about this and the guy who’d worked with Gary (after he’d become a big-shot copywriter) said one time Gary wrote an Ad that flopped.

And Gary didn’t whale around and ball his eyes out saying…

“ohhhh nooo I’m supposed to be the world greatest copywriter and now I just failed this ad, it flopped nooooo!!”

None of that, he shrugged it off and came up with a new ad.

He didn’t take ANY of his failures personally.

And I think THAT’S how you’ve got to be with life, copywriting, and everything else you could want to do.

Good luck,

John
